Public Health Nursing Orientation Training

This course provides an overview of the most important issues and topics related to public health nursing.

Section One: Public Health

  • Definition of Public Health
  • History and Achievements of Public Health
  • How Public Health Works
  • Healthy People 2010 and Health Indicators
  • Public Health Structure
  • Community Assessment

Section Length: approximately 60 minutes, (may vary for participant input time and optional Case Study exercise).

Learning Objectives: By the end of this section, a participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize two characteristics of public health.
  2. Identify Healthy People 2010 and at least three of its leading health indicators.
  3. Discuss the different types of prevention in public health.
  4. Describe three basic steps involved in a community assessment.

Section Two: Public Health Nursing

  • 3 Core Functions of Public Health
  • 10 Essential Services of Public Health
  • Public Health Nursing Definition and History
  • 8 Principles of Public Health Nursing
  • Public Health Nursing Practice Model
  • A Word on Ethics

Section Length: approximately 45 minutes, (may vary for participant input time and optional Case Study exercise).

Learning Objectives: By the end of this section, a participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the Three Core Functions of public health.
  2. Recognize at least three of the Ten Essential Services of public health.
  3. Describe how public health nursing applies to the Three Core Functions and Ten Essential Services.
  4. List as least three principles of public health nursing.

Section Three: Public Health Nursing Practice

  • 4 Spheres of Public Health Nursing Practice
  • Principles of Population-Based Practice
  • Minnesota Intervention Wheel

Section Length: approximately 60 minutes, (may vary for participant input time and optional Case Study exercise).

Learning Objectives: By the end of this section, a participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the Four Spheres of Public Health Nursing Practice.
  2. Articulate the application of population-based practice in public health.
  3. Recognize at least five public health nursing interventions from the Minnesota Intervention Wheel.
  4. Discuss the basic steps in applying the Minnesota Intervention Wheel to public health nursing practice.

Section Four: Your Public Health Nursing Practice

  • Bringing Public Health Nursing Into Your Work
  • Bringing Public Health Nursing Into Your Community

Section Length: approximately 45 minutes, (may vary for participant input time).

Learning Objectives: By the end of this section, a participant will be able to:

  1. List two goals for the application of new knowledge into participant’s public health nursing practice.
  2. Define the target populations relevant to participant’s public health nursing practice.
  3. Describe two methods for reaching participant’s target populations.
  4. Recognize ways participants can collaborate with other programs to promote health and prevent disease.
